L'Oréal: The L’Oréal Group is the largest cosmetics and beauty care company in the world. It has its registered office in central Paris and its head office in the Paris suburb of Clichy. The company focuses its activities on the field of personal beauty. Concentrating on hair color and care, skin care, sun protection, make-up, and perfume, L’Oréal is active in the areas of dermatology and pharmaceuticals and is the leading holder of nanotechnology patents in the USA.
In 1907, Eugène Schueller, a young French chemist, developed a hair-dyeing formula he named Auréole. Schueller formulated and manufactured his own preparations, which he then sold to Parisian hairdressers. In 1909 Schueller registered his company, the Société Française de Teintures Inoffensives pour Cheveux (“Safe Hair Dye Company of France”): the original L’Oréal. The guiding principles of the company which eventually became L’Oréal were research and innovation in the beauty sector.
L’Oréal is a listed company; however, the founder’s daughter Liliane Bettencourt and the Swiss food company Nestlé each control over a quarter of the shares and voting rights.

Lancôme: Lancôme Paris is a luxury beauty brand. Owned by L’Oréal since 1964, Lancôme is part of that company’s luxury products division, which offers skin care, fragrances, and makeup at more exclusivesales points.
The company was founded by Armand Petitjean in France in 1935. Petitjean’s motive was simple: to create a beauty brand that would spread French elegance around the world. The name “Lancôme” was inspired by a ruined castle, Le Château de Lancosme; while the wild roses rambling about the ruins were the inspiration behind the company’s symbol, a single golden rose.
Lancôme launched its first five fragrances in 1935 at the Brussels World’s Fair. Soon after, Lancôme expanded its business into makeup and skincare products. |

Clinique: Clinique is a manufacturer of skincare, cosmetics, toiletries, and fragrances, owned by the Estée Lauder Corporation.
In 1967, American Vogue magazine published an article by beauty editor Carol Phillips with Dr Norman Orentreich called: “Can Great Skin Be Created?” discussing the importance of a proper skin care routine. Evelyn Lauder, daughter-in-law of Estée Lauder, read the article and brought it to her mother-in-law’s attention. Both Carol Phillips and Dr Orentreich were subsequently recruited to help create the brand, and in August 1968 Clinique premiered as the world’s first allergy-tested, dermatologist-driven line at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. In 1976 Clinique became the first women’s cosmetic company to introduce a men’s skin care line when it launched a separate line called “Skin Supplies for Men.” Although Clinique is best known as a skin care line, most of the firm’s revenue is earned through its cosmetics. |
