Hermès:
Hermès is a French luxury house established in 1837, and specializing in leather goods, handbags, accessories, perfumery and ready-to-wear.
The family company is very attached to its traditions rejecting mass production, assembly lines, and mechanization. Hermès products are almost completly "Made in France", hand-made, in small and middle-sized workshops called “Ateliers Hermès”, with a strong focus on very high-quality manufacturing. Most products are created, from the beginning to the end, by one person only (usually employed for decades), guaranteeing the quality and uniqueness of Hermes products.
Hermès is well-known for its handmade handbags. Each bag takes between 18 to 24 hours to be produced. Until recently, customers had to wait one year or even more for delivery of the brand’s most iconic bags (Kelly or Birkin for example).
The famous "Birkin" handbag was named after British actress and singer Jane Birkin. The story of this bag began when Jane complained to Jean-Louis Dumas (former head of the company) that her "Kelly" bag was not practical for everyday use. In response, he invited her to France where both of them teamed-up to design the bag in 1984. Since then, the bag became highly popular despite its very high price ranging from $9,000 to $34,000, and even $120,000 for the most exclusive crocodile and diamond version.
